Project 3: Concept Statement

Concept Statement

With a history dating back over four thousands of years, China has a rich and vibrant culture. As the epicenter of this ancient culture, MeiShan Province is the ideal location for a new China to take on the challenges of a changing world. Integrating sustainable elements into the traditional building style of ancient MeiShan is both a perfect melding of China’s past and future as well as a great starting point for a more environmentally conscience presence in the world.

The design of this project will also focus on the different ethnic minorities who call the MeiShan province home from which to draw inspiration for the palette and textures. Because the Chinese government is creating the MeiShan Cultural and Ecological Park to be a teaching tool on the ancient culture of the region, an integrated museum style exhibition of the Miao, Yao, Dong, and Tujia minorities will educate visitors on the culture, history, and customs of these people who call MeiShan home.

By combining the newest technologies with traditionally green practices such as use of daylighting, natural ventilation and water recycling, buildings in the MeiShan Cultural and Ecological Park will not only educate visitors in the greatness of China’s past but also the brilliance of its future.
